Superpowered Coconut Spirulina Smoothie
Known as a "miracle food", spirulina packs a punch of protein, vitamins, and antioxidants that make it the most nutrient dense food in the world. In only 1 tablespoon of spirulina powder (7 grams), there is 4 grams of protein! It contains all 9 essential amino acids, classifying it as one of the few plants that is a complete protein. This blue-green algae has been around for 3.5 billion years, as long as life has existed on this planet. Spirulina fueled the Aztecs in 16th century Mexico who went on to build one of the most successful civilizations the world has known, and you too can harvest the power of spirulina, a true superfood. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of spirulina you can get your information here, and you can learn more about its history here.
The only catch is that spirulina, this beautifully coloured blue-green algae, tastes like pond scum. It does not go down easy! Over the past few months I've been experimenting with different ways to eat it, attempting to tone down the pond taste, and this recipe here is proof of my success! Finally, a delicious spirulina smoothie that will most likely be the healthiest thing you will ever eat.
My 200 gram container of spirulina cost me $35 (Canadian dollar) and will last me upwards of 5 months. I only ever have 1 tsp in the morning, so despite the hefty price tag right off the bat, one serving works out to be 70 cents (which I think is pretty good value). Be smart, shop organic, and keep an eye out for sales! This superfood packs a hefty punch of nutrients but can also pack a hefty price tag depending on where and when you're buying. If you see a good price I suggest you buy it, and perhaps start out with a smaller amount before you jump right in to buying a massive container like this, just in case you don't end up being as crazy about it as I am.
